I spent a good chunk of time in France<\/a> recently, and while my work travel was dramatically higher in that time period, and therefore I wasn’t able to spend every single day exploring the country, I managed to make the most out of my time there.<\/p>\n

One of things I fell in love with while I was there was\u00a0caf\u00e9 gourmand.\u00a0Caf\u00e9\u00a0gourmand<\/em><\/em>\u00a0varies from restaurant to brasserie to bar in its availability and implementation, but the gist is an espresso served with small portions of desserts, sometimes called\u00a0mignardises<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0petits fours<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I feel like France has been\u00a0keeping a secret from me this whole time.\u00a0Not cool, France.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The presentation of the caf\u00e9 gourmand\u00a0<\/em>is beautiful, and that’s something the French really know about.\u00a0Usually there are 3 or so desserts, with some caf\u00e9 gourmand<\/em>\u00a0being accompanied\u00a0by\u00a0as many as 5-6 desserts.<\/p>\n

Often it’s served on a special plate made to hold the espresso cup plus all of the desserts.<\/p>\n

The desserts range in offering but you’ll sometimes see popular French desserts like the\u00a0macaron<\/em>\u00a0(I have recipes<\/a> for French<\/a> macarons<\/a> here<\/a>, if you remember),\u00a0c<\/em>r\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e<\/em>, <\/span>tarte au citron <\/em>(lemon tart),\u00a0or\u00a0even ice cream or fresh fruit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I blame myself too much for not being observant all of these years, it appears\u00a0caf\u00e9 gourmand<\/em>\u00a0is a relatively new concept in France, too. Wikipedia says they think it started sometime in 2005 in Paris, but even that isn’t 100% sure. In any case, it’s not a centuries-old tradition, but it is delicious nonetheless.\u00a0If only we could get Italian-quality espresso as the coffee (France is not known for their espresso…and some of it is quite bad), I’d be in heaven.<\/p>\n

When should you order\u00a0caf\u00e9 gourmand<\/em>? I think the best time is probably after lunch, mid-afternoon, or even after dinner, if you can’t choose which full-size dessert to order.<\/p>\n

Add this to your to-do list for your next trip to France. Go ahead, I’ll wait.<\/p>\n
