{"id":443,"date":"2008-01-11T07:16:49","date_gmt":"2008-01-11T07:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/11\/2007-year-in-review\/"},"modified":"2012-09-24T10:02:27","modified_gmt":"2012-09-24T08:02:27","slug":"2007-year-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/11\/2007-year-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2007 Year in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know I&#8217;m late &#8211; but last year I did a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/01\/04\/how-i-conquered-the-world-and-how-you-can-too\/\">review of 2006 and some of the highlights, tools and favorite links from that year<\/a>, so I wanted to continue the trend.<\/p>\n<h3>Reading and Watching<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Books (new) read in 2007:<\/strong> 65 (of which 55 were ebooks). I am almost completely digital now. I just find it so convenient &#8211; you can read my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/08\/10\/kiwi-cantaloupe-ice-pops-and-summer-reading\/\">previous<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/06\/ready-to-be-an-e-reader\/\">posts<\/a> about ebooks. When I borrow paper books it&#8217;s almost harder for me to finish them. Though the number of new books read in 2007 is lower than 2006&#8217;s 98 books, I had a ton of re-reads now my electronic library is so large. That&#8217;s another e-advantage! If I finished a book while on the tram, I just opened the next file!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biggest reading month:<\/strong> August &#8211; 12 books. Gotta love the beach. This is also the biggest month for bookstores in Italy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>eBook readers used:<\/strong> old Palm Zire, HP PocketPC and I just received an old Treo from a friend that I am going to test out. Still waiting to buy a dedicated ereader, I&#8217;ve briefly played with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookeen.com\">Bookeen<\/a> and I&#8217;ll hopefully have a chance to test the Iliad soon! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I enjoyed Publishers Weekly&#8217;s 15 Trends to watch in 2008 and how much they talked about digital &#8211; I can&#8217;t wait for e-formats to keep growing and gaining popularity!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Movies<\/strong>: I saw very few movies in the theater, though I was glued to my in-flight entertainment on all of my long flights! I enjoyed this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstshowing.net\/2007\/12\/18\/why-2008-will-be-an-awesome-year-for-movies\/\">sneak-peek into some of 2008&#8217;s new movies.<\/a> &#8211; a few from the list that tickle my fancy: Australia, Be Kind Rewind, The International, The Love Guru, The Other Boleyn Girl &#8211; and with a nod to my series\/sequels I definitely can&#8217;t miss: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Sex and the City: The Movie.<\/p>\n<h3>Blogging, Photography and Computing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blog posts this year<\/strong>: 126 &#8211; Most active month: May<\/li>\n<li><strong>Favorite blog posts:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/11\/how-to-order-an-italian-coffee-in-italy\/\">How to Order an Italian Coffee in Italy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/09\/how-to-avoid-a-pickpocket\/\">How to Avoid a Pickpocket<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/20\/italy-gift-guide\/\">Italy Gift Guide<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>RSS feeds following<\/strong>: 210 in 13 categories (down 5 feeds from last year) &#8211; I just switched from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloglines.com\">Bloglines<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/reader.google.com\">Google Reader<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pictures taken \/ on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/msadventuresinitaly\/\">Flickr<\/a><\/strong>: 3070 \/ 1014 &#8211; This year was the year of the camera for me. My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/01\/02\/back-in-milan-heavier-and-lighter\/\">old camera died<\/a>, I bought a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000I1ZWRC?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=msadventuresinitaly-20&#038;linkCode=xm2&#038;creativeASIN=B000I1ZWRC\">Canon Rebel XTi<\/a> (the price has come way down since!) and then I bought a small on-the-go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000NK6INU?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=msadventuresinitaly-20&#038;linkCode=xm2&#038;creativeASIN=B000NK6INU\">Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP<\/a> in November that I keep in my purse for quick shots and video!<\/li>\n<li><strong>External drives:<\/strong> 2 &#8211; I broke my shiny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000NDBRJC?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=msadventuresinitaly-20&#038;linkCode=xm2&#038;creativeASIN=B000NDBRJC\">250GB Seagate<\/a> drive a week after being back in Italy (argh!) but now I&#8217;m using a flat (non-tower) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000J1HPXK?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=msadventuresinitaly-20&#038;linkCode=xm2&#038;creativeASIN=B000J1HPXK\">Western Digital 160GB<\/a> (which I won&#8217;t tell you how many euros I paid since I&#8217;m embarassed, but on Amazon it&#8217;s CHEAP!). I need space for all the pictures!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bloggers met (in person) in 2007<\/strong>: 2007 was a huge year for me in <strong>meeting Italian bloggers<\/strong>. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/02\/girl-geek-dinner-italia-recap\/\">Girl Geek Dinner<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/28\/femcamp-a-mortadella-party\/\">FemCamp<\/a> to Pandemia&#8217;s dinners to the Cena Lunga dinner to founding Web Women Italy, I can&#8217;t list them all! I <strong>did meet a few non-Italian bloggers<\/strong> that I had been following for a while: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlebovitz.com\">David<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roboppy.net\/food\/\">Robyn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/finnyknits.blogspot.com\">Finny<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sistergirltales.blogspot.com\">Arlene<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jessicatravels.com\/\">Jessica<\/a> &#8211; I hope to meet many more since I&#8217;m hoping to attend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogher.com\/blogher_conference\/conf\/2\/general\/1\">BlogHer&#8217;s conference in SF in July<\/a>. Anyone else??<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Website logo and design:<\/strong> I found these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.logolounge.com\/articles\/default.asp?ArticleID=540\">Logo trends interesting<\/a>. My own website went through a redesign in early December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moving away from Microsoft Office:<\/strong> I think I created less than 10 Office files this entire year for personal use. I&#8217;m using <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\">Google Docs<\/a> heavily but I&#8217;ve been checking out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zoho.com\/\">Zoho<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/\">Open Office<\/a> as well. I think the <strong>most important thing about documents, spreadsheets and presentations now is mobility<\/strong>! I can reach them from anywhere.<\/p>\n<h3>Food, Cooking &#038; Eating<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stops documented on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/tour-del-gelato-blogroll\/\">Tour del Gelato<\/a><\/strong>: 22! <\/li>\n<li><strong>Food Trends in 2007<\/strong>: Pomegranate, panna cotta, matcha tea, pumpkin, marshmallows, gelato, cupcakes (Serious Eats Ed Levine has <a href=\"http:\/\/edlevineeats.seriouseats.com\/2007\/12\/2007-the-year-in-food-trends.html\">his 2008 trends and predictions<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trends in 2008 I see coming up<\/strong>: Flax seed, champagne, fennel\/anise, semifreddo, the rebirth of the egg<\/li>\n<li><strong>My dominating tastes of 2007<\/strong>: Pistachio, Hazelnut chocolate, Onion foccaccia<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaving behind this year<\/strong>: Treacle toffee &#8211; Sadly, I OD&#8217;d on this in September after Scotland and it will never be the same for me.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Does My Blog Look Good in This (DMBLGIT) recognitions:<\/strong> 3 &#8211; This definitely motivates me! This year, <strong>I&#8217;ll be hosting DMBLGIT in April<\/strong>, so I&#8217;m really looking forward to it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How did I do on my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/01\/04\/how-i-conquered-the-world-and-how-you-can-too\/\">\u201cI Dare\u201d cooking challenges for 2007<\/a><\/strong>? I think pretty good.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> <strong>Eggplant Parmigiana<\/strong> &#8211; I made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/27\/segesta-sicily-eggplant-parmesan-stacks\/\">Eggplant Parmigiana stacks<\/a> but I haven&#8217;t done the way S&#8217; mother does. That&#8217;s next.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Troccoli (pasta)<\/strong>&#8211; I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/06\/fresh-pasta-with-basil-tomatoes-and-burrata\/\">made<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/07\/fresh-lemon-pasta\/\">pasta<\/a> quite a bit this year, and every time I like adding my special touch like hot pepper or lemon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gelato <\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1580088082?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=msadventuresinitaly-20&#038;linkCode=xm2&#038;creativeASIN=1580088082\">David Lebovitz&#8217; Perfect Scoop<\/a> gave me some inspiration for this goal and I made both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/25\/watermelon-sorbetto-granita-from-the-perfect-scoop\/\">Watermelon Sorbetto-Granita<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/03\/fresh-fig-sorbet\/\">Fig Sorbet!<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Roast <\/strong>&#8211; I did not make a roast this year but I saw that Pioneer Woman just put up a post about a roast so I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll be tackling that one soon!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bread <\/strong>&#8211; I made bread a few times, most notably around Easter with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/20\/sage-honey-pecorino-heart-bread\/\">Sage, Honey &#038; Pecorino Heart Bread<\/a> and some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/27\/celebrating-thanksgiving-abroad-expat-perspective\/\">multiseed rolls for Thanksgiving<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>So what&#8217;s in store for &#8220;I Dare&#8221; cooking goals of 2008?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Macarons <\/strong>&#8211; Everyone&#8217;s been abuzz about macarons for some time and since I went to Paris and sampled them from Laduree and Pierre Herme directly, I&#8217;ll be able to judge my own attempt more accurately, since I have something to base it on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roast <\/strong>&#8211; It will be taken off this year!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Orrecchiette and Ravioli<\/strong>&#8211; I want to continue my foray into handmade pasta. It&#8217;s incredibly satisfying.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bread <\/strong>&#8211; Continuing the bread theme, I&#8217;d like to tackle two of my favorites &#8211; naan and challah.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indian <\/strong>&#8211; I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/26\/weekend-gourmet-at-the-california-culinary-academy\/\">took an Indian cooking class<\/a>, I went to India and I brought back spices! Nothing should stop me now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Well Fed recognized Food Blogs in their <a href=\"http:\/\/wellfed.net\/2007\/12\/17\/2007-food-blog-award-winners\/\">annual Food Blog Awards<\/a> &#8211; find a new blog to follow!<\/p>\n<h3>Travel and Moving Around<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cities lived in:<\/strong> 1 &#8211; Milan, Italy (finally I stayed put. Living in the center is great).<br \/>\n<strong>Countries visited:<\/strong> 6 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/07\/a-san-francisco-interlude\/\">U.S.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/16\/easter-weekend-in-berlin\/\">Germany<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/08\/peebles-scotland-nomad-family-haggis\/\">Scotland<\/a>, France, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/08\/reflections-of-india\/\">India<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/02\/a-quick-jaunt-to-switzerland-and-lake-geneva\/\">Switzerland<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Years without a car<\/strong>: 4.5 and counting. We may buy one in 2008 but I&#8217;ll still continue to use public transportation or my bicycle for everyday travel. <\/p>\n<h3>Buying More Handmade<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to going more digital, I am going to try and buy more handmade things this year. I am looking to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\">Etsy.com<\/a> for inspiration, but I have a <strong>lot of crafty lady friends<\/strong> that I hope will step up to the plate and put some of their things on sale for me!<\/p>\n<p>To help keep abreast of designers and crafters, I follow several blogs:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.designspongeonline.com\">Design Sponge<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohjoy.blogs.com\">Oh, Joy!<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/swissmiss.typepad.com\">SwissMiss<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.thisnext.com\">ThisNext<\/a> and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notcot.com\">NotCot<\/a> have some good discoveries.<\/p>\n<h3>New Year&#8217;s Resolutions<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;m not really big on NY Resolutions, but this year I am making&#8230;one. <\/p>\n<p>Here it is: <strong>Improve my (outgoing) relationship with the Post Office<\/strong>. I want to get better at organizing, scheduling and mailing things here in Italy. I will have a lot of opportunities to test this in the new year with all the contests and events I have coming your way!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How was 2007 for you?
