{"id":367,"date":"2007-07-18T07:10:02","date_gmt":"2007-07-18T07:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/18\/early-morning-in-venice\/"},"modified":"2008-09-01T19:27:30","modified_gmt":"2008-09-01T19:27:30","slug":"early-morning-in-venice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/18\/early-morning-in-venice\/","title":{"rendered":"Early Morning in Venice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had some visitors in town recently, and though their trip was over by the time I posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/11\/how-to-order-an-italian-coffee-in-italy\/\">How to Order an Italian Coffee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/09\/how-to-avoid-a-pickpocket\/\">How to Avoid a Pickpocket<\/a> and those posts were no help to them, I was lucky enough to be able to join them on the weekend in Venice and do a minimum of &#8220;tour-guiding&#8221; if I could.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in a hotel right near St. Mark&#8217;s square, which was surprisingly quiet, and one morning before breakfast while my friends were still getting ready, I went for a walk. It wasn&#8217;t quite as early morning as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msadventuresinitaly.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/14\/spoleto-in-early-morning\/\">Early Morning in Spoleto<\/a>, but it was early enough to enjoy an almost-empty St. Mark&#8217;s square.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t been to Venice or St. Mark&#8217;s square (San Marco), let me tell you what&#8217;s missing from this picture: waiters wading in and out of the chairs set up in front of their restaurants, people trying to see the menu before committing to sitting down, a few carts selling &#8220;pigeon food&#8221; (corn) in bags, people sitting\/standing\/crouching amongst thousands of pigeons trying to coax them into eating out of their hands, on top of their heads, or on their arms; accomplishing this and then realizing it&#8217;s very disgusting so they start squealing and\/or crying, tourists lining every imaginable surface that can be leaned on\/sat on\/crouched under for refuge from the heat, hundreds of people in line to enter St. Mark&#8217;s, numerous carts selling tasteful Carnevale hats, paper fans, and snow globes, tourist groups winding through the crowd following a red umbrella held by the group leader, and several digital photographers ready to make your memory in Venice come alive now!<\/p>\n<p>So yes, this is a welcome sight.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/msadventuresinitaly\/843888540\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1284\/843888540_dabf7d0980.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"St. Mark's Square in Early Morning\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Of course there were still lots of pigeons. <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/msadventuresinitaly\/843023365\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1307\/843023365_6f6ea2632f.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"The Doge's Palace in Early Morning\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>I love the columns that surround St. Mark&#8217;s square, and I also think the Doge&#8217;s Palace&#8217;s columns are beautiful as well. <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/msadventuresinitaly\/843889280\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1011\/843889280_5b30990ecd.jpg?resize=333%2C500\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Columns at the Doge's Palace\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>I could have sat in one of those empty chairs for quite some time. Che pace! <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/msadventuresinitaly\/843022133\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1352\/843022133_13c6f9a46c.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"The Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>I was tempted to go and get a coffee in one of the near-empty bars on the square, but as I was trying to travel light, I had only my camera and my cell phone.
