Sometimes my work is like a day spent with Laurel & Hardy….let me give you an example. A true, actual account of how we are organized. (If you don’t get my inspiration for this, please look here <\/a>afterwards. Actually, read it anyway, it’s hilarious.)<\/p>\n

A little background and non-techie’s note: I’m Systems Manager for our company, and we have different websites and resources on different servers. This database on this machine, this web site on this machine, etc. <\/p>\n

We constantly move servers and IP addresses around and someone has to keep track. Me!<\/p>\n

The IP (*internet protocol) addresses of our machines only differ in the last number (octet) (xxx.xxx.xxx.##), and therefore, we only use that last number when referring to each (x machine on x IP). Oh yeah, and the name of each machine is also number.<\/p>\n

Confused yet? Just wait! Remember this is a working example. More than example, it’s my reality! [If you’re still a little lost about IP addresses, read here<\/a> ]<\/p>\n

And what’s the number for?<\/p>\n

Me: 36.<\/p>\n

Me: Yep. 4, 36.<\/p>\n

Let’s start over…how many servers are there?<\/p>\n

Me: Nine.<\/p>\n

And each machine has an IP address?<\/p>\n

Me: Yes. Some have more, like 11 and 12.<\/p>\n

What’s 12?<\/p>\n

Me: Well, it’s 2 or 9, depending.<\/p>\n

9?<\/p>\n

Me: That’s on 12.<\/p>\n

And 2?<\/p>\n

Me: There is no 2.<\/p>\n

But you just said….<\/p>\n

Me: 12 is on 2.<\/p>\n

Ok, so 12 is on 2.<\/p>\n

Me: You got it. and 3. and 4. and 5.<\/p>\n

Right….Where’s 6?<\/p>\n

Me: That’s 11.<\/p>\n

What about 7?<\/p>\n

Me: 11!<\/p>\n

11 is on 7?<\/p>\n

Me: No, it’s on 6. 10 is on 7.<\/p>\n

But I was asking about 7.<\/p>\n

Me: That’s on 11.<\/p>\n

7 is on 11, and 11 is on 6, and 10 is on 7?<\/p>\n

Me: Exactly! And also 8.<\/p>\n

8 is on 7?<\/p>\n

Me: No, 8 is now 15, which is on 38. 10 is also on 8.<\/p>\n

What about 9?<\/p>\n

Me: That’s on 12. And 11 is on 9.<\/p>\n

So, 9 is on 12, 11 is on 9 and 12 is on…<\/p>\n

Me: 2. 3. 4. 5. Oh yes, and 10.<\/p>\n
