Actually, read it anyway, it’s hilarious.)

A little background and non-techie’s note: I’m Systems Manager for our company, and we have different websites and resources on different servers. This database on this machine, this web site on this machine, etc.

We constantly move servers and IP addresses around and someone has to keep track. Me!

The IP (*internet protocol) addresses of our machines only differ in the last number (octet) (xxx.xxx.xxx.##), and therefore, we only use that last number when referring to each (x machine on x IP). Oh yeah, and the name of each machine is also number.

Confused yet? Just wait! Remember this is a working example. More than example, it’s my reality! [If you’re still a little lost about IP addresses, read here ]

———————————————–
Sara, I need to know the name of each server and the IP address it’s on.

Me: Ok. There are 9 servers. 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15.

What’s the number for?

Me: 36.

I mean, each machine has a number?

Me: Yes.

And what’s the number for?

Me: 36.

It’s for 36?

Me: Yep. 4, 36.

Let’s start over…how many servers are there?

Me: Nine.

And each machine has an IP address?

Me: Yes. Some have more, like 11 and 12.

What’s 12?

Me: Well, it’s 2 or 9, depending.

9?

Me: That’s on 12.

And 2?

Me: There is no 2.

But you just said….

Me: 12 is on 2.

Ok, so 12 is on 2.

Me: You got it. and 3. and 4. and 5.

Right….Where’s 6?

Me: That’s 11.

What about 7?

Me: 11!

11 is on 7?

Me: No, it’s on 6. 10 is on 7.

But I was asking about 7.

Me: That’s on 11.

7 is on 11, and 11 is on 6, and 10 is on 7?

Me: Exactly! And also 8.

8 is on 7?

Me: No, 8 is now 15, which is on 38. 10 is also on 8.

What about 9?

Me: That’s on 12. And 11 is on 9.

So, 9 is on 12, 11 is on 9 and 12 is on…

Me: 2. 3. 4. 5.
