Why are you charging for this content when it’s free on your site?
The ebook is not just a copy of the original post – it’s actually twice the content, including expanded existing content and new chapters on Italian breakfast and bar culture in Italy which aren’t in the original post. I added pronunciation guides so you can order that much easier, and I also added several new photos and updated some of the existing photos, too.

Yes, I enabled lending for this book. Hopefully your friend will love it and buy their own copy after, too.

It takes stepping back and shaking routine off your shoulders to see the details and intrigue in things that have become commonplace. It happens when friends come to visit, and often when I spend time in another city in Italy. And most of those experiences happen when I step away from the computer. (telling myself something, perhaps?)

Recently I’ve had the opportunity to do this several times for friends visiting me (and at least one more time, next week when my best friend comes to visit me in Italy for the first time) and I like this reminder that not only is the grass greener on the other side of the fence, but I should be reminding myself on a daily, not bi-monthly/yearly basis, about the beautiful place I live in.

I’m known to do crazy things like go to Venice for a few hours and I convinced a visiting friend this would be a good idea. We lucked out, too, with a beautifully sunny October day, and it was freeing to just “hit the highlights” of Venice, which of course included food and gelato.

I met up with Nan from Living Venice, a friend and expat I have been in contact with for years but had never met. I’m always amazed at how many friends I have like this – friends I could ask for advice from or help yet it might be hard for us to pick each other out in a crowd. As I made plans to meet with Nan for some cicchetti, Venetian little bites/snacks (above), I told my visiting friend, “we’ll meet my friend who lives here for lunch” and immediately after “it’s the first time I’m meeting her.”

It’s such a powerful feeling to connect with so many people through something as simple as a website.

I’ve found myself feeling quite nostaglic this morning, about this blog, whose entries have been public for more than 6 years (last month) but there are another 2+ years of entries which are now private and start from the day I stepped off the plane from the US on this big adventure living abroad.

Some of those entries are the most raw and honest writing I’ve ever done, and I hope that I can start to get back to that feeling of writing freedom somehow. The absolute pouring of emotion through words, fear of failing, flailing through experiences, and using writing as a tool and therapy both. It’s something that I’ve shielded a bit on this site as traffic grew, but it’s a disservice especially to myself as it stifles my creativity.

I kind of blame Jori Des Jardins’s recent post for sparking some of this this morning. Thanks for that something – I plan on creating something more often :)

This year saying goodbye to summer seems particularly poignant, even though I only took a week + some days off (to head to Hawaii) compared to traditional Italian summers with 3 or so weeks off. The difference is that my job allowed me to work from wherever, so I left muggy Milan early on and came back when it was starting to mellow again.

I got a Samsung Nexus S in August thanks to a concerned boss; I’ve had the iPod Touch and the iPad for years, but never upgraded my slider-text-only-phone to a smartphone, mainly because I live online and don’t really use my phone unless I’m traveling. Now that I have a camera in my pocket, I find myself capturing moments a lot more often, even when I carried my mini-camera in my purse. I’m also using the WordPress mobile app for blogging, and for quick photo posts it’s a single click!

Growing up, I pleaded and begged to be able to go to amusement parks, and I never found a ride I didn’t like. When a little fair came to town while we were in Puglia, I had to sample some of the rides. This was my favorite – the HULK! It looked slightly harmless as it jumped up and down, but once I got on I was in danger of losing my shoes, my purse, everything! I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. I also saw The American Show, and posted about it on What I See.

Caffe’ shakerato - one of my favorite summer drinks in Italy. I only had a few of these this summer, so if it heats up at all this month I’ll make sure to order a few more.

Two other refreshing drinks after a day at the beach - Gassosa, and Lemon Soda – the first is a fizzy sweet tonic water, and the second is a fizzy lemon soda with real pieces of lemon in it. Love both of them.

Amazing pane e pomodoro (bread and tomatoes) and a few vegetables sott’olio/sott’aceto (pickled) and olives. I had mozzarella nodini / knots as well.

A pizza stuffed with onions that have been cooked until they’re melting. I literally dream about this pizza. Luckily I can get this pizza in Puglia year-round. I just have to make the trip!

Hands-down, one of the best fritto misto (mixed fried plate) I’ve eaten in my life – on the beach at Marina Romea, near Ravenna, Italy. Aside from super-juicy prawns, calamari, and fried anchovies and other frutti di mare, and there were fried vegetables underneath like zucchine and onions. So good.

Here’s what the others ate – so much tagliolini that they just give you the entire pan to serve from.

Still in Ravenna, could you go to the Emilia-Romagna region and not eat a piadina? Not I. This freshly-heated piadina had sausage and grilled onions inside. Yum. (Note: when you’re desperate in Italy for Mexican food, a piadina also subs for very thick tortillas)

I have a pepperoncino plant, hot pepper, outside which greets me every day. I’m not sure I’ll use up all those hot peppers (though I am eating spicy quite a bit lately), I definitely want them around.

The pepperoncino theme is popular, check out this little table arrangement with a spiky cucumber (live) and pepperoncino.

A caffe’ affogato (drowned coffee with ice cream) that was one of the cheapest things in that place (and good).

Crazy Greenpeace grass cars, and scooters.

People enjoying the nice weather and sitting on the steps of the Duomo (before it started pouring that evening).

And finally, how you know summer is really over: the stores are decorated for Christmas. I about threw up in my mouth when I saw this. I was wearing shorts.

What will you be remembering about this summer?

This is what I eat a lot of while I’m in Puglia – una pepata di cozze. Sometimes spelled impepata or ‘mpepata – “peppered” mussels, I think an alternative translation is steamed mussels, prepared with and garlic, and yes, pepper.

So delicious.

Quick and easy, only a few ingredients and one pot are needed to make this meal, and very little prep aside from the cleaning and soaking of the mussels. It can also be cheap since mussels are only a few euro for a kilo here in Italy. I’ve done this dish back in Milan as well, though without the salty sea air the experience does wane a bit. I love eating a pepata di cozze on the beach at lunch.

Pepata di Cozze – Steamed Mussels

I love the simplicity of this dish, but if you want pasta with your shellfish, try spaghetti allo scoglio (frutti di mare) or spaghetti con vongole – clams

a few cloves of garlic
olive oil
1 kilo of mussels
pepper, freshly ground
flat-leaf parsley (optional)
small tomatoes (optional)
white wine (optional)

Prepare the mussels if they haven’t been cleaned – soak them, scrub them well and remove the beard (step-by-step directions on cleaning mussels) and rinse them.

Get a large, deep cooking pot you have a lid for (glass is best so you can see in), and heat several tablespoons of olive oil in the bottom of the pan. Add the garlic cloves and sauté until they start to brown.

At this point, you can also add in a glass of white wine or the tomatoes if desired, and heat that back up to a fast simmer before the next step.

Add the drained mussels to the pot, and close the lid on top. In 4-5 minutes all the mussels should have opened – if not, turn up the heat a bit and put the lid back on for a few more minutes. Depending on how many mussels / size of pot / etc it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes.

Take the pot off the heat (and turn off), and add the chopped up parsley and ground pepper. Discard any unopened mussels.

Serve in soup bowls and toast pieces of bread to serve at the bottom of the bowl or on the side.
