A Different Way to Scoop Gelato: The Flower

March 31st, 2010 · Tags: Discovering Food · Italy

Who thought you could reinvent a scoop of gelato?

You’ll never be able to form gelato into cylindrical ice cream blocks like those I ate from Thrifty’s growing up, but with just a little innovation, you can take gelato from uninteresting heaps as normally scooped into a little work of art: a flower.

You almost don’t want to eat it. Almost.

It wasn’t the best gelato I’ve ever eaten, but I sure do remember it.

    I love gelato. One reason to look forward to the warmer months here in Italy. What an interesting way to present it.

    I love gelato too. I had a “flower” in Paris. I wondered when they were going to stop putting gelato on . It was delicious.

    Sweet greetings from Frog Hollow Farm! Gelato, granita….it’s all good! How about designing a thin brioche cone with granita and topped with a dollop of fresh cream? Never believed I would eat granita for breakfast but we did, almost every morning, when in Sicily! Ciao, bella!

    The Flower— sounds like a Dharma Station (yep, deliberate Lost reference). How about the Brioche con Gelato– aka The Sandwich?

    Ciao Sara, I just found your post by way of Jessica Spiegel. I’m also a California girl from the San Francisco bay area. Love your blog and look forward to living in Italia vicariously through you! A presto! Melissa

    @Cathy – I’m looking forward to “Italian summer lunches” aka gelato.
    @anne – where was this?
    @FrogHollow – a brioche cone? Now that sounds very interesting.
    @Erica – nooo, LOST is killing me right now. And I love me a brioche gelato sandwich, but not as artistic.
    @Melissa – Nice to meet you!
    @Theresa – where did you see it in Paris?
